Introduction and Purpose
The Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association is dedicated to advancing health and safety throughout the mining industry. We believe that supporting students who pursue mine safety and health education helps create safer mining operations and healthier work environments. To encourage the next generation of mine safety professionals, JAHSA offers a scholarship to help qualified students offset education-related costs in mining health and safety fields.
Who May Apply
This scholarship is available to individuals preparing for careers in mining or in health and safety disciplines related to mining. Awards are offered to candidates in these categories:
- High school seniors who will be enrolled in a college or university degree program;
- Undergraduate students currently enrolled in a college or university degree program;
- College/university graduates who are enrolled in a graduate degree program.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered, applicants must:
- Be enrolled (or planning to be enrolled) at an accredited U.S. college or university;
- Be pursuing a major or degree program related to mining, or a health or safety program specifically tied to the mining industry;
- Complete and submit the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association (JAHSA) Scholarship Application form.
Application Materials (submit originals)
The application packet must include the following:
- Official transcripts covering the last three years of completed education;
- Financial disclosure statement;
- Short essay of 200–300 words;
- A list of extracurricular activities;
- At least two letters of recommendation.
Application Preparation and Formatting
- The application form can be completed electronically, but you must print the finished form and mail the original.
- Essay requirements: 200–300 words, typed, double-spaced, 12‑point font.
- Label any attachments as Attachment A, Attachment B, etc.
- Do not add materials beyond those requested.
- Do not fold, staple, or paperclip the application or supporting documents.
- Use single-sided pages only.
- Fill in every field on the form; if a question does not apply, enter N/A.
Deadlines and Submission Instructions
- The printed, original application must be mailed and postmarked on or before May 1, 2026. Applications received after that date will not be considered.
- Mail the complete packet in an 8 x 12 manila envelope (or larger).
- Make and keep a copy of the entire submission for your records.
- Applications missing any required information will be ineligible.
Selection Criteria and Notification
A selection committee will evaluate all complete applications and choose recipients based on academic achievement, demonstrated financial need, GPA, leadership, and commitment to a mining-related career. The committee will reach consensus on awards; recipients will be notified by mail no later than July 15, 2026, with final confirmations completed by August 1, 2026.
Award Details
- Scholarship amounts vary depending on available funding and the pool of applicants.
- Awards are granted without regard to race, color, sex, age, national origin, religion, or disability.
- Funds will be available for the fall semester 2026 and will be sent directly to the recipient’s college or university. Payments will be credited to the student’s institutional financial account and may be used only for tuition and book expenses.

9. Make a copy of the full package for your records.
10. Mail in an 8 x 12 manila envelope or larger by May 1, 2026.
