Sharon C. Ryan Memorial Scholarship

Sharon served for many years in the Maintenance Department at Twiddy & Company. When she first met Doug Twiddy while employed elsewhere, he immediately recognized that she would be a vital addition to the Twiddy team. For more than 19 years in Maintenance, Sharon coordinated with the in-house crew and local vendors to plan and carry out upkeep and services for Twiddy’s vacation properties. That work introduced her to numerous Outer Banks residents and their families; she became a devoted friend to colleagues at Twiddy & Company and people throughout the local community. At company gatherings she was famously the first to hit the dance floor and often stayed until the end of the night. Twiddy remembers her with affection for her warm smile and her outstanding work ethic.

Eligibility and review process
- Read the eligibility criteria carefully before submitting an application. Familiarity with the Outer Banks is not required, though applicants are encouraged to learn about the area prior to applying.
- A selection committee will evaluate submissions according to the requirements listed below.

Preferred applicant profile
- Preference given to applicants who have connections to Northeastern North Carolina.
- Must be enrolled at a college or university in the United States.
- Minimum cumulative GPA (or international equivalent) of 3.0.
- Active participation in campus or community organizations, with demonstrated leadership roles.

Required application materials
Please include all of the following with your application:
1. An original essay of at least 500 words responding to one of these prompts:
- What does family vacation mean to you?
- How will the evolution of technology influence the hospitality industry?
2. Official college transcripts showing courses taken and current GPA (or international equivalent).
3. Two letters of reference: one addressing character and one addressing professional qualifications.
4. A current professional resume.
